Two surfers from Huntington Beach, Mark Austin and Nea Post, won the men’s and women’s open divisions in the National Scholastic Surfing Assn. national championships Thursday at the Oceanside Pier.
Austin, a two-time California high school champion from Huntington Beach High, defeated Garvin Thorson of St. Augustine, Fla., Rob Machado of Cardiff and Doug Sommerville of Solana Beach. Machado already had claimed the national points title for the 1989-90 season.
Post, the overall women’s champion in points and also from Huntington Beach High, defeated five others in her final, including Carlsbad’s Hoey Capps, who finished third.
Cardiff’s Ron Phillipy won the AAU master’s division, and Carlsbad’s Banning Capps won the AAU juniors. Carlsbad’s John Salas won the AAU longboard.
