SHORT TAKES : Hugh Downs Lauds Jack Paar

NEW YORK — Hugh Downs, who served as sidekick to Jack Paar during his five years as host of “The Tonight Show,” said he considers Paar his special television hero.
Downs, co-host of the ABC’s “20/20,” says in Sunday’s Parade magazine that he also admires Barbara Walters and Jane Pauley.
Of Paar, Downs said: “I owe him a debt. He was always upfront, always showing his emotions. And never devious.’ He paused, then added, ‘A bit strange, perhaps.”
Admitting that he objected strenuously when ABC first suggested that Walters become his co-host because he didn’t want to share the job, Downs said they now get along fine. “She’s so good, especially interviewing world leaders,” he said.
Describing Pauley as “one of the greatest broadcasters ever,” Downs said he is impressed by her interviewing skills. “I’ve been interviewed by Jane,” he said. “In eight minutes, she got out every point of the story. A real pro.”
