EAST BERLIN — East German farmers dumped milk outside a government office and handed out free milk, eggs and vegetables to passers-by today to protest what they called the takeover of their domestic market by West Germany.
Since the two Germanys merged their economies July 1, supermarkets in the East have filled up with West German produce, forcing local food off the shelves and threatening financial ruin for growers.
