California IN BRIEF : ARCATA : 250 Hold Rally for Logging Industry

About 250 supporters of the logging industry rallied and marched Saturday in opposition to a November ballot initiative that would limit the California timber harvest. The group, called Mothers’ Watch, gathered at a local baseball park and marched half a mile to the Northcoast Environmental Center, a meeting place for organizers of the “Redwood Summer”--a series of anti-logging protests. About a hundred counter-demonstrators, many of them members of the Earth First! environmental group, appeared at the rallies, which were peaceful.
