Philharmonic Society Plans New Work for Anniversary

NEWPORT BEACH — The Orange County Philharmonic Society will commission a work to mark its 30th anniversary of presenting Los Angeles Philharmonic concerts in Orange County, executive director Erich Vollmer announced at the society’s annual meeting Monday.
The new work, by a composer to be named, will be played in April, 1992, by the L.A. Philharmonic, conducted by Zubin Mehta, according to Vollmer.
In other society news, Edward D. Halvajian of Laguna Beach was named chairman of the board. Seven officers were elected to the board. They are, as new vice presidents: William P. Conlin of Newport Beach, Marcia Coy of Fountain Valley, Robert Garfias of Irvine, Alan J. Jacobs of Newport Beach, Roger T. Kirwan of Corona del Mar and Roger H. Smith of Huntington Beach; and as secretary-treasurer, Steven A. Lupinacci of San Juan Capistrano.
The society will finish the 1989-90 season with a surplus of about $84,865 on a budget with a total income of $2,495,943, officials reported. Income from ticket sales increased by 8% over the previous season, for a total of $1,301,600.
(The remainder of the budget was made up of individual, corporate-foundation and government grants; income was derived from fund-raising events.)
The budget for 1990-91 is projected to be about $2,778,000.
