Eugene L. Roberts Jr., who announced July 31 that he was stepping down as executive editor of the Philadelphia Inquirer, will become a professor in the College of Journalism at the University of Maryland. Roberts, 58, is one of the country’s most honored newspaper editors. His paper won 17 Pulitzer Prizes during his 18-year tenure. Before that, Roberts was national editor, a Vietnam War correspondent and Southern correspondent for the New York Times. He will join the Maryland faculty in September, 1991.
