THE SIDELINES : Ex-Reliever Bridges Dies at 59

JACKSON, Miss. — Marshall Bridges, a relief pitcher for four major leagues teams, has died of cancer. He was 59.

Bridges died Monday at the University of Mississippi Medical Center.

He had 23 victories, 15 losses, 25 saves and a 3.75 earned run average during seven major league seasons beginning in 1959.

Bridges, who was known as “Sheriff,” broke into the majors with the St. Louis Cardinals and pitched for the Cincinnati Reds, New York Yankees and Washington Senators before returning to the minor leagues after the 1965 season. His best season was 1962, when Bridges went 8-4 with 15 saves for the world champion Yankees, for whom he made his only World Series appearance.
