Pomona College President Alexander to Retire

David Alexander, president of Pomona College in Claremont for the past 21 years, announced his retirement Thursday, effective next September or later if a replacement is not found in time. Alexander is one of the longest-serving chief executives in American higher education.

“This transition should be a joyful and exciting time for all of us, because the strength of Pomona College readies it for its ongoing progress,” Alexander, 57, said in a statement. Under his leadership, Pomona solidified its reputation as one of the best liberal arts schools in the West, if not the nation. It is part of the six-school consortium known as the Claremont Colleges.

A spokeswoman at the 1,375-student campus said Pomona officials soon will form a committee to search for a new president.
