Santa Margarita Breezes to Victory

MISSION VIEJO — Quarterback Trevor Yankoff and running back Josh Ireland each scored two touchdowns to lead Santa Margarita to a 27-0 victory over Escondido Rancho Bernardo Friday night in a season opener before 1,200 at Saddleback College.
Rancho Bernardo was playing its first varsity game.
Ireland rushed for 139 yards in 22 carries and scored on a seven-yard pass from Yankoff and a two-yard run.
Yankoff completed 12 of 19 passes for 148 yards and scored Santa Margarita’s first two touchdowns on runs of three and one yards.
Santa Margarita’s first score came late in the second quarter. After a Rancho Bernardo punt to the Santa Margarita 48, the Eagles took seven plays to score on Yankoff’s three-yard run with 1:15 left in the first half. Travis Lucero kicked the extra point to give Santa Margarita a 7-0 halftime edge.
Yankoff’s second score came with 8:58 left in the third quarter. Ireland’s pair of touchdowns came in the fourth quarter.
Defensive back Art Feeney intercepted two passes for Santa Margarita.
Rancho Bernardo halfback Brent Sausen had 61 yards in 14 carries.
