COLLEGE FOOTBALL REPORT / WEEKDAY UPDATE : UCLA : Slump Is Bruins’ Longest Since 1943

UCLA’s seven-game non-winning streak is the school’s longest since 1943, when the Bruins lost their first seven games under Coach Babe Horrell. UCLA beat St. Mary’s in the eighth game, 19-7, and after losing to USC for the second time in the season, finished with a 1-8 record. The Bruins and Trojans played twice during the 1943-1945 seasons because of schedule restrictions resulting from World War II.

During that non-winning streak, the Bruins lost to such teams as St. Mary’s Pre-Flight, Alameda Coast Guard and March Field.

UCLA defensive tackle Brian Kelly will be examined today to determine the extent of a knee injury he suffered in the first quarter of Saturday’s 34-14 loss to Oklahoma at the Rose Bowl. UCLA Coach Terry Donahue has said that Kelly is the team’s best defensive lineman.

Michael Williams, a reserve safety, suffered a dislocated shoulder and will be inactive for at least a week.

It was 102 degrees at the kickoff of Saturday’s game and the temperature reached 118 on the field. That’s reminiscent of a 1963 USC-Oklahoma game at the Coliseum, when the temperature on the field was 117.
