11 Hurt, 2 Monks Held After Myanmar Protest

YANGON, Myanmar — Buddhist monks and students threw rocks and fired stones from catapults at soldiers and police during anti-government demonstrations in Mandalay, injuring 11 officers, the government said Tuesday.
Police arrested two monks, but no shots were fired, Col. Than Tun, a member of the ruling military council’s information committee, told a news conference.
Two hundred flag-waving monks and students threw stones at troops in Myanmar’s central city of Mandalay on Monday, he said. Myanmar was formerly known as Burma.
