WORLD IN BRIEF : BULGARIA : Opposition Group’s Rally Draws 30,000

At least 30,000 people rallied in Sofia, Bulgaria, to cheer on the opposition to the ruling Socialist Party. Speakers addressing the crowd emphasized the unwillingness of the Union of Democratic Forces to join a coalition government with the Socialists, the renamed Communist Party. Dimitar Ludzhev, a prominent opposition politician, said: “We will do everything possible (to ensure) that the country faces a new election in the shortest time, an election which the democratic forces can win . . . and the UDF and democracy will win.”
