A 5-year-old girl suffered severe injuries Tuesday when she was hit by a speeding car driven by an unlicensed driver, police said.

Vanessa Espinoza, whose address was not available, was walking in the 1500 block of Kenalan Drive in Otay Mesa about 4:20 p.m. when she was hit by a car driven by a 16-year-old without a driver’s license, San Diego police said.

Vanessa suffered head injuries and a broken leg, police said. She was taken to Children’s Hospital, where she was being operated on Tuesday night.

The driver’s identity was not available. The car was traveling about 45 m.p.h. in a residential zone with a 25 m.p.h. speed limit, police said.
