P.M. BRIEFING : Parisians Battle Trash Mountain

PARIS — Mayor Jacques Chirac ordered emergency measures today to clear away huge piles of trash accumulating throughout Paris during a strike by 600 garbage truck drivers.
The strike for higher wages was launched Monday by the Communist-affiliated General Confederation of Labor. In many neighborhoods, including some of the wealthiest in the city, sidewalks have been made impassable by mounds of odorous garbage.
Chirac said private trucks would be hired to collect trash in many neighborhoods. Elsewhere, he said, large containers will be positioned where residents could deposit their trash.
