Rio Mesa 34, Santa Clara 21--Led by the passing of senior quarterback Angel Lopez, Rio Mesa overcame a second-half rally by visiting Santa Clara to post its second victory.
Lopez threw two touchdown passes, set up two others with two long completions, threw a two-point conversion pass and also ran two yards for a touchdown. He completed six of 10 for 212 yards.
Santa Clara took a 21-19 lead with 9:17 remaining on a seven-yard run by fullback Scotty Tripp. Rio Mesa countered with a one-yard run by Sal Balsano, a score that was set up by a 34-yard pass from Lopez to Jamie Liddell. Lopez threw touchdown passes of 71 yards to Liddell and 37 yards to Swanson Nunnery in the first half.
