SHORT TAKES : ABC Plans Pre-Dawn Newscast

NEW YORK — ABC News said today that it will start a pre-dawn newscast in January that will air each weekday from 1 a.m. to 6 a.m. The show will have two anchors, but they have not been chosen.
The newscast, which has not been given a name, marks the second time ABC News has tried a late-night program since the establishment of “Nightline” as a regular series 10 years ago.
The new program, in the planning stages for months, will be competing with the 24-hour Cable News Network and CBS’ taped “Nightwatch,” which emphasizes interviews and began in 1982.
