Burbank High’s William Rivera drilled an apparent 36-yard field goal as time ran out Thursday at Beverly Hills, but officials disallowed the kick because time had expired, leaving the Bulldogs with a hollow feeling and a 25-24 loss to the Normans.
Burbank (1-3) marched deep into Beverly Hills territory, moving to the 19-yard line in the closing seconds on an 11-yard completion from quarterback Jason Chandler to wide receiver Trevor Dossen. On fourth and four, Burbank was whistled for illegal procedure, stopping the clock with two seconds left.
Rivera rushed onto the field as Burbank hurriedly lined up for a field-goal attempt. After he converted the kick, the Bulldogs looked to the referees, who indicated time had expired before the snap.
Earlier in the fourth quarter, Burbank held a 24-18 lead and attempted a 21-yard field goal, but the kick was blocked. Beverly Hills (2-2) scored on the next play when quarterback Ziv Gottlieb connected on an 80-yard pass with David Seraf.
Steve Brenes led Burbank with 105 yards in 14 carries. Jay Sumner added 82 yards in 11 carries, and scored on a five-yard run and a 58-yard interception return.
