Gannett Co.: The owner of USA Today, 81 other daily newspapers, and broadcast and outdoor advertising units reported third-quarter profit of $79.4 million, down 4% from a year earlier, on revenue of $827.9 million, about the same as in 1989’s third quarter. The Arlington, Va.-based firm said consolidation of the retail industry continues to affect advertising demand.
