Supervisors Order Probe Into Melee at Hospital

Los Angeles County supervisors Thursday ordered an investigation into a melee between rival gangs that led to the shooting of a teen-ager at County-USC Medical Center.
“I don’t understand why there isn’t adequate security or why gang members aren’t isolated, as they are in the county jails,” Supervisor Mike Antonovich said.
“I’ll tell you, boy, we are in a jungle,” Supervisor Pete Schabarum said.
Toeibio Sanchez, 18, of Los Angeles was in serious but stable condition Wednesday after being shot in the face during the altercation Tuesday, which involved about 20 youths who were visiting patients, said Harvey Kern, special assistant to County-USC’s executive director. Kern said the hospital is reviewing its security and visiting policies.
