PREP ROUNDUP : Rosary’s Girls Turn It Around, Beat No.2 Mater Dei in Tennis

Joyce Cruz and Mandy Gomez each swept in singles and Rosary High School, the third-ranked girls’ tennis team in the Southern Section 2-A Division, defeated second-ranked Mater Dei Thursday at the Fullerton Tennis Center.
Mater Dei (3-2 in the Angelus League) had defeated Rosary, 10-8, this season and the match Thursday ended in a 9-9 tie, but Rosary (13-3, 4-1 in the league) won on games, 77-70.)
With its victory, Rosary takes sole possession of first place in the Angelus League.
In South Coast League tennis:
Capistrano Valley 13, San Clemente 5--Farrah Tierney won, 6-1, 6-2, 6-1, and Jenny Canfield won, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, for host Capistrano Valley (12-3, 5-1), the fourth-ranked team in the 4-A Division.
In Sunset League tennis:
Fountain Valley 11, Huntington Beach 7--Renee Urricariet and Michelle Berkowitz each swept in singles and remained undefeated in league play for visiting Fountain Valley (12-4, 10-0).
In Century League boys’ cross-country:
El Modena 15, Canyon 45--Mike Terry, Jessie Dunivin, Brett Pease, Brent Austin and Luis Valencia finished in a five-way tie for first place for the second-ranked team in Division II.
In Century League girls’ cross-country:
Canyon 20, El Modena 38--Kim Nelson ran 18 minutes 54 seconds on the hilly Canyon-campus course to break the course-record of 18:56 she shared with Laura Flatauer. Flatauer was second in 19:11 for Canyon (4-0), which is the second-ranked team in Division II.
In Sea View League boys’ cross-country:
Corona del Mar 21, Tustin 36--Mike Marumoto and Jack Hogan tied for first (16:06) to lead Corona del Mar on the Back Bay Course.
In Century League girls’ volleyball:
El Modena 3, Foothill 1--Melizza Benitez had 33 assists and host El Modena (12-0, 6-0) won, 15-2, 13-15, 15-2, 15-12.
In Sea View League volleyball:
Newport Harbor 3, Woodbridge 2--Tara Kroesch had 18 kills and Maureen McLaren, returning after missing three weeks’ of play with an ankle injury, had 12 as host Newport Harbor (10-4, 4-2) won, 15-9, 4-15, 15-2, 4-15, 15-13.
In Olympic League volleyball:
Orange Lutheran 3, Ayala 0--Renee Wright had 21 kills and visiting Orange Lutheran (10-5, 7-4) swept, 15-6, 15-10, 15-12.
In Freeway League water polo:
Buena Park 11, Sonora 4--Noah Cureton had six goals to lead host Buena Park (3-0 in league).
