WORLD : Paper Sparks Indonesia Protest

JAKARTA, Indonesia — Troops were called in today to stop Muslim protesters attacking the offices of an Indonesian tabloid weekly that rated the Prophet Mohammed behind the president and a pop singer in a popularity poll.
The offices of the weekly, the Monitor, were damaged and windows were smashed by stone-throwing demonstrators.
President Suharto ranked first in the poll. The founder of Islam came 11th, behind Suharto’s eldest daughter, pop singer Iwan Fals and the paper’s editor. Indonesia has the world’s largest Muslim population.
