Japan to Send Troops in Gulf Cassette Players

TOKYO — U.S. troops in Saudi Arabia may soon be able to listen to something more than the desert winds.
Japan plans to send 40,000 Walkman-type cassette players to the troops as part of its aid to the multinational forces in the Persian Gulf region, the Japan Times reported today.
The tape players will be sent to the Saudi capital of Riyadh between Oct. 29 and Nov. 5 and distributed to soldiers in the country, the English-language daily said.
Supplying the tape players was the Japanese government’s idea rather than a response to a U.S. request, the newspaper said. The equipment is part of Japan’s $2-billion commitment to aid the multinational forces in the region.
