WORLD : Mandela, Zulu Chief Will Meet

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa — African National Congress leader Nelson Mandela and rival Zulu chief Mangosuthu Gatsha Buthelezi will meet “in the near future” in an effort to end political violence in the country, the ANC announced today.
The announcement by the ANC’s National Executive Committee represented a further moderation of ANC policy after months of resistance to such a meeting on the grounds it would give Buthelezi allegedly unwarranted recognition as a major political player.
It also comes prior to full-blown power-sharing negotiations between black leaders and the white government and follows an appeal last week from Anglican Archbishop Desmond Tutu for a strategy summit among blacks before the talks actually begin.
