Equitable Life Assurance Society of the United States, New York, has named Joseph J. Melone, president of Prudential Insurance Co., as its new president and chief operating officer. Melone, 59, will start Nov. 5. Richard H. Jenrette, Equitable’s chairman and chief executive, had held the title of president. Melone joined Prudential in 1968 as executive director of marketing and has been its president since 1984.
