A pregnant woman nearly delivered her baby in a traffic jam on Interstate 8 Tuesday, but her father used an emergency call box to summon paramedics, who transported her in time to the hospital.
Tanya Schrier of San Diego was listed in good condition after delivering an 8-pound, 7-ounce girl at Sharp Memorial Hospital.
Schrier went into labor at 7:15 a.m., but her husband, Brian, had gone to work, so her father, Fred Wood, tried to drive her to the hospital.
When they became caught in rush-hour traffic on I-8 near College Avenue, Wood used a freeway call box to summon help.
Paramedics took Schrier to the hospital, where she delivered the baby shortly after 8 a.m.
“I sure like those call boxes now,” Schrier said. “I’m afraid if they weren’t there, we wouldn’t have made it on time.”
