THE SIDELINES : Lyle Giving Up PGA Tour Card
- Share via
LONDON — Former Masters champion Sandy Lyle said today that he is giving up his PGA Tour card to concentrate on European golf tournaments.
Lyle, winner of the 1988 Masters, was the last European to hold a full tour card after fellow-Briton Nick Faldo surrendered his at the start of 1989 after a dispute over eligibility requirements for the U.S. circuit.
Tour rules demand 15 tournament appearances each season, and Lyle said he feels unable to meet that schedule. He can still play the three U.S. majors--the Masters, the Open and the PGA championship--as well as invitational events.
Spain’s Seve Ballesteros and Bernhard Langer of West Germany, both winners of the Masters, also have given up their Tour cards.
