At least 64 people have been killed in an explosion of knife and gun battles for political supremacy in South African black townships, and military reinforcements were called in to help police restore order. The fighting erupted between residents loyal to Nelson Mandela’s African National Congress and migrant workers sympathetic to the Zulu-based Inkatha Freedom Party.
