These breadsticks are different. Fat and crunchy, they look too much like Lincoln logs to make your table look chic. But pick up one of these innocent sticks, take a small bite--and wait. At first you get a fresh, buttery flavor; 15 seconds later the pepper kicks in. It’s as if tiny rockets are exploding in your mouth.
Made only with good, simple ingredients--flour, sweet butter, water, yeast and pepper--the breadsticks are just one of the classic American products made by Pam Sherman’s Bakery. They’re good with a glass of wine, nice to nibble between meals, and very handy to have when you get home from work, desperate for a bite to eat while dinner is cooking.
An 11 3/4 ounce box of pepper breadsticks (about a dozen) costs $5.50, including postage and handling. The Sherman Bakery requires a three-box minimum for mail orders, but the breadsticks freeze nicely. They are also available rolled in salt.
