A White House spokesman said “consumer confidence is rising” despite the war as Federal Reserve Board Chairman Alan Greenspan warned that a long war could bring a deep recession. Greenspan said in an interview that the nation could face a deep and long recession if the war with Iraq lasts past the middle of April.
