ATHENS — A Greek military transport plane with 54 people on board disappeared from radar screens today while attempting to land in bad weather northeast of Athens, Greece’s air force said.
The C-130 Hercules was flying from a military airport in Elevsina, south of the capital, to the Nea Ankhialos military airport near the central port of Volos.
The Greek Air Force said the plane, with 49 soldiers and five crew, disappeared nine minutes from its scheduled landing.
“Air force, army, naval and police units are conducting a search supported by aerial units,” an announcement by the Ministry of National Defense said. The search area included mountainous terrain and the bay on which Nea Ankhialos and Volos are situated.
