NAIROBI, Kenya — Two park rangers were charged today with the murder of a British woman in a southwestern Kenya game reserve. Jonah T. Magiroi, 28, and Peter M. Kipeen, 26, both Kenyans, were formally accused of slaying Julie Anne Ward, a nature photography enthusiast, at the Masai Mara Game Reserve in July, 1988.
Ward’s partly charred lower left leg and lower jaw were found in the animal sanctuary on Sept. 13, 1988, a week after she was reported missing. Her rented vehicle was found abandoned about 10 miles from where authorities discovered her remains and a pile of burned personal belongings.
Police at first said the 28-year-old woman was killed by wild animals, but her father, English hotelier John Ward, insisted she was murdered and pressed for an investigation.
