John Smith, a world champion the past four years, became the first wrestler to win the Amateur Athletic Union’s Sullivan Award as the outstanding U.S. athlete for 1990.
Smith, 25, who won an Olympic freestyle wrestling gold at the Seoul Olympics, outpolled nine other finalists.
