Justice Dept. Sets Up Insurance Fraud Unit: The Justice Department--fearing a repeat of the massive savings and loan scandal--has launched a nationwide initiative to investigate fraud in the insurance industry, a top department official said. Assistant Atty. Gen. Robert Mueller said the Justice Department has set up a unit to run the criminal fraud initiative after recognizing that the potential exists for major financial losses. Mueller said the unit will also investigate cases such as false statements by insurance companies and corruption cases, including bribes to state insurance regulators.
