Majerus Says He Isn’t Irish at His Core

SALT LAKE CITY — Utah Jazz Coach Rick Majerus is Catholic and has a strong following in Indiana, but he doesn’t see himself as the Notre Dame type.
“I’m the antithesis of a Notre Dame guy. I call it spaghetti, they call it pasta. I’m blue-collar, they’re Brooks Brothers. I mean, you got to wear a tie. I don’t even own a tie,” he said.
Majerus, who led the Runnin Utes to a 30-4 record in his second season at Utah, formerly coached at Ball State in Indiana.
But he said Monday he hasn’t talked to Notre Dame about succeeding Digger Phelps.
“I have more of a chance of going to BYU than I do to Notre Dame,” Majerus said.
Mormon Church-owned Brigham Young is Utah’s chief rival.
