From Times Staff and Wire Reports
Leftist guerrillas blew up high-tension lines in central El Salvador, blacking out the entire nation for an hour, a spokesman for the government-owned power company reported. Local observers were unable to recall another instance during the country’s 11-year civil war when the whole country was blacked out by sabotage. The blackout occurred only hours after a rebel announcement that guerrilla sabotage of utility lines was being suspended in urban areas to create a more conducive climate for U.N.-mediated peace talks under way in Mexico.
