U.S. Government Gets an Assist in This Victory

After handily beating the Soviet Union in a six-event dual meet the day before on the track at the Mt. SAC Relays, the U.S. women figured to have a more difficult time with the Cubans Sunday in throwing events.

But, with an assist from the U.S. government, the United States won, 18-13, despite Cuban victories in two of three contests, the javelin throw and the shotput.

Lacy Barnes was the only winner for the United States with a discus throw of 197 feet, 7 inches.

The difference for the United States was depth. Cuba entered only one thrower in each event because the rest of its team was denied visas to enter the country. The Soviet Union also was without one of its runners Saturday due to the same problem.
