Fire Caused by Smoking Leaves 19 Homeless

A fire started by careless smoking roared through a two-story apartment house early Monday, causing an estimated $35,000 damage and leaving 19 people homeless, authorities said.
The fire in the converted home at 2624 S. Maple Ave. in South Los Angeles was reported at 3:47 a.m., Fire Department spokesman Jim Wells said. Seven companies of firefighters had the fire out at 4:21 a.m., he said.
One firefighter suffered from heat exhaustion and was taken to California Medical Center in good condition.
