Team USA moved into the medal round at the World Hockey Championships for the first time in six years, beating Finland, 2-1, at Turku, Finland.
Todd Krygier of the Hartford Whalers scored the winning goal at 11:49 of the third period.
Brian Mullen, a winger for the New York Rangers, helped preserve the victory with a terrific save near his own goal about a minute after Krygier’s goal. With goalie John Vanbiesbrouck down and out of position, Teppo Numminen’s close-range shot was just inches from the line before Mullen swept it away.
The Soviet Union, Sweden and Canada qualified for the medal round earlier. The Soviet Union is favored to win a record 23rd world title.
