GENEVA — The World Health Organization received reports of 14,000 new AIDS cases in April, bringing the cumulative total since the U.N. agency began collecting statistics on the disease a decade ago to 359,271, WHO reported Saturday.
New figures from Africa, particularly Uganda, one of the hardest hit countries, brought the monthly report of cases up from 9,000 in March to 14,000 in April, the WHO said. But the agency cautioned that its figures represent only a fraction of the actual total. Spotty reporting techniques in most of Africa mean the real total number of cases is at least three times the official figure, WHO officials said.
