Garment Factory Owner Gets 3 Years in Tax Case

The owner of a Los Angeles garment district factory was sentenced to three years in federal prison Monday for under-reporting the taxes he withheld from his workers.
Stuart Walpert, 50, of San Gabriel, kept about $500,000 in Social Security and income tax withheld from the up to 100 workers at his sewing factory, La Mode, from 1984 to 1986, prosecutors said.
