Nation IN BRIEF : LOUISIANA : 2 Abortion Bills Approved by House

The Louisiana House passed two bills that would mandate prison terms for performing illegal abortions. One bill that would allow abortions in the case of rape or incest or within the first 13 weeks of pregnancy to save the life of the mother, passed 71 to 32. The penalty for performing an illegal abortion would be a fine and up to 10 years in prison. A more restrictive bill, which would permit abortions only to save the life of the mother, passed 68 to 33. It would make the penalty for an illegal abortion up to 15 years in prison and fines. Both bills were sent to the Senate.
