A Guide to the Best of Southern California : HANDMADE : Wall Flowers

Elaine Odland Cain is partial to her portraits of rabbits in kimonos, but she also hand-paints other animals and all kinds of flowers, in vibrant colors, on tiles--4x8-inch or 6x6-inch or multiples thereof.
Open to commissions, Cain has created murals for homes, restaurants, even cities; she recently did a set of 8-foot-square designs based on Norwegian history for Poulsbo, a small town near Seattle.
Cain charges $20 for a single tile, about $100 for a four-tile picture 12 inches square, and $325 for an 18x24-inch ceramic painting.
She is convinced she can spot a “tile person.” “They are people who usually wear fabrics with an interesting texture, and they will run their hands over the shiny, glassy surface of the tile,” she says. “I was a tile person myself and didn’t know it.”
