Ricardo Patrese of Italy and teammate Nigel Mansell of Britain led provisional qualifying for the Mexico City Grand Prix. Patrese toured the 2.75-mile course at 128.944 m.p.h. to Mansell’s 128.472.
Formula One champion Ayrton Senna, who was up to 127.996 m.p.h. in only the second lap, crashed seconds before the trials ended when a wheel came loose. Senna, who was pinned under his car, walked without assistance to a waiting ambulance. His car will require extensive repairs.
