Michael Andretti won the provisional pole for Sunday’s CART Indy car race at Detroit, with Al Unser Jr. second on the 2.5-mile, 17-turn downtown street circuit. There will be another round of qualifying today to determine the final starting order.
Andretti turned a lap in 86.374 m.p.h., followed by Unser at 86.347, both considerably short of the track record of 88.512, set by Andretti in 1989.
