Library Expansion Moves Ahead
The proposed expansion of the Lawndale Library moved ahead last week when the City Council approved a land agreement with Los Angeles County, which owns and operates the library.
In a 4-1 vote, the council agreed to deed to the county three parcels of land--about 6,000 square feet--required for the library expansion and for public parking. The council also agreed to lease to the county a 3,000-square-foot parcel for a 40-space parking lot.
County officials now can apply for the $1.1-million state grant needed for the expansion, which would double the size of the 33-year-old library.
If the application is denied, the agreement will be voided.
