The Newport Beach Dukes, fresh from upsetting the first-place team in TeamTennis’ Western Division, couldn’t pull off the same accomplishment Saturday against Atlanta, the top team in the Eastern Division.
The Thunder downed Newport Beach, 29-15, in a match in Atlanta. The Dukes had stopped previously undefeated San Antonio, 26-23, Thursday.
Newport Beach (6-7) can qualify for the playoffs with a victory today over host Charlotte.
Manon Bollegraf and Tim Pawsat had the only victory for Newport Beach. The mixed doubles team just got past Marty Davis and Martina Navratilova with a 6-5 (5-1) victory.
Davis and Kelly Evernden of Atlanta (11-2) defeated Rick Leach and Pawsat, 6-3, in men’s doubles.
Mariann de Swardt and Navratilova, beat Bollegraf and Elise Burgin, 6-1, in women’s doubles.
Navratilova then beat Bollegraf, 6-1, in singles. Burgin replaced Bollegraf, who injured her leg when she was down, 1-5, but lost the final game.
In men’s singles, Evernden defeated Leach, 6-4.
