Lamarr Denies Theft: Hedy Lamarr, screen siren of the 1930s and 1940s, denies that she stole from a drugstore in Casselberry, Fla., saying her shoplifting arrest was the result of the store’s attempt to get publicity. Lamarr, who is in her late 70s, was arrested at Eckerd Drugs after police found her allegedly hiding $21.48 worth of laxative tablets and eye drops. Lamarr said she had a receipt for the merchandise. Calls from Lamarr’s fans poured into the Casselberry Police Department on Friday. Many offered to pay her drugstore bill or to provide legal assistance. A hearing is set for Aug. 20 in Seminole County Court.
