TENNIS ROUNDUP : Chang Waits Out Delay for Victory

Michael Chang overcame a six-hour rain delay to advance to the second round in the ATP Championships on Tuesday at Mason, Ohio.

Chang, seeded 13th, defeated left-handed Rodolphe Gilbert of France, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1.

“I didn’t think I was going to play today and I wasn’t notified until late that I was going to play,” said Chang, 19, whose match began at 5 p.m. EDT. “They called me at four-something. I’m glad it worked out.”

Boris Becker beat France’s Jean-Philippe Fleurian, 6-3, 6-3, in a night match that was also delayed.

Top-seeded Gabriela Sabatini of Argentina routed Silvia Farina of Italy, 6-0, 6-0, in the second round of the Players Challenge at Toronto.

“I think I played perfect today,” said Sabatini, who was taken to deuce just once in the match. “I was very satisfied. I did everything right.”

Sabatini will next play 11th-seeded Helen Kelesi of Canada, who beat Japan’s Kimiko Date, 6-4, 6-4.

Jordi Arrese of Spain defeated Argentina’s Franco Davin, 6-2, 6-2, in the first round of the Czechoslovak Open at Prague. Arrese, seeded fifth, took only 58 minutes to oust Davin.
