Jim Abbott recalled teaming with Scott Kamieniecki to pitch a no-hitter at the University of Michigan, but he couldn’t recall the opponent. “Little Sisters of the Poor, I don’t know,” he said.

Abbott gave up only one hit over his first eight innings Wednesday, a liner by Dan Gladden that surprised Abbott as it spun toward him. “I just kind of whiffed at it,” he said. “It was a changeup. I thought he hit it a lot harder than he did.”

Abbott credited Lance Parrish for guiding him to his third victory in four decisions, but Parrish said Abbott had by far the harder job. “It’s a real pleasure to work a game like this,” Parrish said. “It’s what makes the game fun for me as a catcher. I call the pitch and give the target and he’s doing it. He’s been doing it all season. He’s such a good pitcher right now I’d put him up against anybody in the league.”
