Police said the engineer had tried to warn the man but could not stop in time. The train, which was going about 85 m.p.h., did not derail, and there were no reports of injuries aboard.
The accident occurred near the Costa Mesa Freeway and about 2 miles south of the train station.
The dead man was not immediately identified, although he was described as black and about 50 years old. Police and Amtrak officials remained at the scene late Friday investigating the incident.
